It's easy being green

Police Credit Union is working hard to change how we operate to reduce our impact on the environment.

Following are a few tips for what you can do to help.

A flick of the switch

Turn off appliances when you're not using them and switch off lights when you leave the room (unless there's someone still in there of course!).

Clean up your act

By only running your washing machine when there's a full load and using the energy-saving setting, you can save 45kg of CO2 per year. Tumble drying a load of clothes generates more than 3kg of greenhouse gases - hang them out instead!

A whole new light

Compact fluorescent light bulbs use 80% less energy and last up to 8 times longer than conventional light bulbs.

Say no to plastic

Take your green shopping bags each time you visit the store so that you can decline plastic bags whenever possible. One plastic bag can take up to 500 years to decay in landfill - lucky there is an alternative.

Count the stars

Compare Energy Rating labels before you buy an appliance. Your appliances will return the favour with lower energy costs.

Think pink

Installing ceiling insulation will minimise your heating and cooling costs for years to come.

Too cool for school?

Turn your thermostat down by 1 degree in winter and up by 1 degree in Summer and save money on your next bill.

Dress for the season

Choosing appropriate clothing in winter and summer reduces your need for heating and cooling.

Drive less

Walk, bike, carpool or take public transport more often. You'll save approximately one kilogram of carbon dioxide for every 3km you don't drive!

Be water wise

Treating and transporting drinking water to our homes consumes energy. Plant 'water wise' gardens and mulch your garden to minimise water use.

Reduce, reuse and recycle

The domestic waste we generate has a large impact on greenhouse gas emissions. Reduce, reuse and recycle whenever you can.

Buy local

Transporting food and other products consumes a lot of fuel. Wherever you can, try to buy from farmers markets and other local providers and support the environment as well as your community economy.

Go green

Most Australian electricity retailers offer a green option allowing you to source your energy from renewable sources. For less than $1 a day, you could reduce your household emissions to zero.
