Police Credit Union Honoured With A Very Special Award

14 December 2017

On Wednesday, 6 December 2017, some of our People & Culture team attended a very special reception at Government House. We joined 20 other leading South Australian employers who have committed to employing people with disabilities.

The reception, hosted by the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AO and Mrs Le was held to present the employers with awards for their efforts in demonstrating exceptional support and commitment in employing people with disability.

Barkuma’s open employment service holds the event every second year, with this being the seventh time the reception has been held and over 190 employers have been recognised. The awards aim to show appreciation to employers who include people of all abilities in their workplace. They are also designed to encourage other employers to do the same and change community attitudes.

Marianne Verrall, Manager of Barkuma’s Business Development team says “Everyone looks forward to these awards as they are a great way for Barkuma to say thank you to our terrific employer organisations. The awards enable us to acknowledge that our employer partners are truly disability confident in their inclusion of the people we support in employment. They are showing the way for other organisations.”

Marianne also acknowledged the support of the Governor and Mrs Le in making Government House available, which has hosted the event since its inception in 2005.

As a workplace proudly celebrating diversity, being recognised with this award was an honour! Jackson Stringer joined our team thanks to Barkuma’s Work Experience Program – a program giving people with disabilities the opportunity to gain successful employment. Jackson has had a significant and positive impact in such a short period, from his outlook on working with us to his love for doughnuts, we love having him in our team!
