Get to know Ben…

What position did you start in at Police Credit Union and how did you end up in your current role?

I commenced with Police Credit Union in 2018 as an Assistant Accountant in the Finance team. My managers and team were happy to teach and pass on their knowledge. This gave me lots of motivation to get involved in as many areas of the credit union as possible. Promotion opportunities arose within the Finance team, and I was rewarded for my efforts with successful appointments to the Senior Accountant and most recently to Manager of Treasury & Funding.

What appealed to you about working for Police Credit Union?

The exposure to multiple aspects of banking. In much larger organisations you are often pigeonholed into limited routines and tasks. At Police Credit Union you are taught how each aspect of your role is related to other responsibilities in your own team, as well as other departments.

Can you describe what you do in your role?

Primarily my role is Treasury and Liquidity Management. However, throughout my time here I have taken on a variety of different roles and responsibilities, I am involved with and contribute to APRA reporting, Interest Rate Risk, Forecasting, Stress Testing as well as Capital Management. I also work on our Carbon Offset strategy with our reporting and looking at our expenses, it’s a way for me to be involved with reducing our environmental impact for our operations.

You recently won a scholarship through Police Credit Union to further your studies. What are you studying and how will it help in your career?

I am very thankful for the scholarship opportunity provided by Police Credit Union. Currently I am studying to obtain a Graduate Diploma in Chartered Accounting. Internal mentorship will help me develop areas within my current role that I can further progress, as well as helping me to identify areas that could be improved within our current processes. With further qualification, I will be put in a great position for any future opportunities arising at Police Credit Union.

What’s the best part of your job?

There aren’t too many jobs like this in Adelaide. It’s unique to be involved with Treasury and Liquidity at such a high level, and to see how this ties into other departments is exciting. The exposure that I get daily is something that I am very grateful for, and I’m sure that there is still more for me to learn.

What have been some highlights during your time with Police Credit Union?

The biggest highlight for me is being Police Credit Union’s Peer Choice winner for 2024. It’s great recognition from my peers across the whole organisation, knowing that additional effort to assist others does not go unnoticed.

Why do you think Police Credit Union or banking is a good place to start your career?

Banking is a great place to start learning in the finance industry. Police Credit Union offers a great opportunity for entry level roles and to progress your knowledge as you build your career. Hard work gets rewarded at Police Credit Union. It’s in the best interests of the organisation, and for yourself, to go above and beyond what is expected.

What are you binge watching right now?

Dexter has me hooked at the moment.

What do you like to do with your spare time or on the weekends?

I am involved with a local Cricket Club, where I play socially in the Summer. Recently a lot of time has been spent studying. I also enjoy DIY projects, even if a lot of the time these don’t quite go to plan.

What is your funniest memory at Police Credit Union?

One of the shared kitchens was left a mess, the culprit must have been in a rush to leave the night before. When they arrived back in the morning to tidy it up a colleague of ours wanted to prove a point and created art labels for the masterpieces of mess that the culprit created. The area was sectioned off with bollards, as if it was being presented in a museum.

What do you like the most about working at Police Credit Union?

I really enjoy getting the complete picture of my work. It’s great to be part of the discussions and review of data that I have prepared. Knowing there are important conclusions being drawn from my day-to-day work and being involved in those decisions is very unique and important to me.
